Swim teaching methods compared
Swim Lesson Methods Compared: ISR, Infant Aquatics, Red Cross, Play-Based: what should San Diego readers know?
A neutral overview. Different methods suit different kids and families. Ask your pediatrician if you're unsure.
| Method | What it is | Format | Ages | May suit | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ISR (Infant Swimming Resource) self-rescue | Teaches rollback-to-float. Walking children learn swim-float-swim to reach the wall. | 1:1, about 10 min, 4–5 days/week for about 4–6 weeks | 6 mo–6 yrs | Families with home pools who want survival skills early | ISR |
| Infant Aquatics survival | A similar self-rescue focus (roll to back float, swim to edge), including practice in clothes. | 1:1, about 10 min, 4–5 days/week, 4–6 weeks | Babies–young kids | Same as ISR. Often followed by group classes | Infant Aquatics |
| American Red Cross Learn-to-Swim | Six progressive levels, from water comfort to strokes and endurance. Parent and Child Aquatics comes before it. | Group or private | Parent & Child about 6 mo–3 yrs; levels about 6+ | Kids who do well with step-by-step levels; many city/Y programs | Red Cross |
| Station/level programs (e.g. SwimAmerica) | Skill stations similar to the Red Cross levels | Group | School-age | Structured group learners | comparison |
| Play-based / parent-and-me | Builds comfort and readiness through songs and games, with a parent in the water | Group with parent | Under 3 | Building water comfort, bonding; not drowning prevention by itself | AAP |
The AAP notes there's no evidence that infant lessons reduce drowning, and that the repeated dunking used in some infant training can be a negative experience for some children. Survival programs say they teach gently and stress supervision. Talk it over with your pediatrician. AAP policy 2026
