Quick answers
When should my child start swim lessons?
The American Academy of Pediatrics says lessons can begin after a child's first birthday, based on the child's readiness. For babies under 1, parent-and-child water play is fine, but there's no evidence infant lessons reduce drowning.
Do swim lessons make a child drown-proof?
No. The AAP and CDC both say lessons are one layer of protection. Kids still need close, constant adult supervision, a four-sided pool fence, life jackets in open water, and adults who know CPR.
How much do kids' swim lessons cost in San Diego?
Published 2026 prices run from $23 for a City of San Diego group session to about $149 a month for 30-minute group classes at private schools, and $65–$115 per private lesson at your own pool. See our sourced price table.
What certifications should a swim teacher have?
Look for a current American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor (WSI) or similar instructor cert, current CPR and First Aid, and a background check. ISR instructors are certified by ISR.
Is SD Swim Teacher Finder a swim school?
No. It's a free directory and matching service. We don't teach, and we don't employ the instructors listed.
